Italy has become a very popular honeymoon destination so it is no wonder that many couples elope to Italy and celebrate their weddings all in the same place. Italy has it all – from the beautiful olive trees of Umbria to the glitzy coast line in Ravello. Gelato anyone? The Fine Arts Curation Photographer Kerry Jeanne photography recently traveled to Italy and reports on what’s best to do where to visit and how to eat…
We decided to visit Italy stopping in different cities for our sixth wedding anniversary. It was difficult to make a decision but we ultimately chose Northern Italy including Venice Verona and Lake Como. Both of us love history and are excited to see all the places that we had only heard about.
Venice was our first stop. We were warned against going to Venice in September because of the crowds but it was not as bad as expected. The main sites like Piazza San Marco were packed with tourists. We escaped the crowds by sneaking into The Hall of Doges. While everyone was at the Basilica.
We took all the back streets we could and ended up getting hilariously lost several times. We found the most beautiful (and abandoned) courtyards with flowers trees and local musicians and a truly authentic Italian ambience. Venice was our favourite stop!
We then went to Verona where by accident we stumbled across Tocati. This festival was started in 2003 with the aim of reviving old medieval games. Each courtyard had a unique game. Women raced while holding jugs full of water on their heads.
Men lifted heavy bags and carts and the children competed in relay races throughout the entire city. Music singing and dancing were also part of the event. We were both so captivated and entertained by the event that we put away our cameras and phones to just be in the moment. Now that we’ve heard about the festival we hope to return and enjoy it in full!
